Welcome to Ashbourne Céilí Club
A major highlight on any céilí club calendar is the hosting of a céilí and we in the Ashbourne club held ours a few weeks back.
Preparations starts well in advance with the booking of venue and band, and the usual bit of marketing and promotion. Broadly speaking, there are two things which mark the success of a céilí and the esteem with which the club is held in the
dancing fraternity.
The first is the size of the turn out and boy, did we get a crowd. They came from all over the East and North-East and some of our Monaghan friends even hired a bus. One particular couple who travelled from Cavan booked into a local hotel for the night. It wasn’t that the journey back home in the wee hours fazed them but they told me they had been dancing for the previous four nights on the trot and wanted and “early” night. Should anyone show them this article, I hope they won’t mind me mentioning that they’re not in the first flush of youth, but they’d put many of our young generation to shame with their energy and enthusiasm.
Now for the second reason - the famous supper. Knowing the importance of this event, our club plans it with military precision. And what a spread we had. Those who say that baking is a lost art should have seen our makeshift tables groaning with apple tarts, buns scones and confections too numerous to mention. we modestly lapped up the compliments but secretly prided ourselves on a job well done.
Would you like to BE A PART OF IT? Join us any Tuesday night in Gaelscoil na Cilli (Irish School behind Community Centre) at 8.30 pm. We would like to wish all our céilí dancing friends a happy and peaceful Christmas.
