Who Are We?

The idea for a céilí club for Ashbourne, Co. Meath, was conceived in the mind of Anne McGhee, a popular local lady, and the first step was to organise a workshop. This took place in the Parochial Hall in Ashbourne in Spring 2003. Not one Ashbourne person turned up! However, she persisted and set about organising weekly classes. On the first night, four showed up but by the final night, this had increased to twelve.

Initially, the classes were taught by Mr. Tom Marry from Cairde Rince Céilé na hEireann. The current incumbent, Ms. Olive Finn, took over as múinteoir in 2006 and by that stage, class numbers had doubled.

The Club has gone from strength to strength. It organises two fior cheilithe (nights of céilí dancing to a live band) a year in October and March. Club members also travel far and wide to céilís organised by other clubs. A weekend away is planned each year which not only gives us a chance to practise our dancing but to bond and forge friendships.

This is a young, vibrant club and the day to day running is carried out by an enthusiastic committee. We are always delighted to see new members and you will be assured of a ‘cead mile failte’.
